How To Grow Tomatoes Upside Down

by GaryG on May 12, 2008

Last year I saw a couple of people growing their tomatoes upside down and the idea intrigued me. We’ve never had a garden at our house, but I decided this year I was going to try growing tomatoes upside down.

What I did was to purchase a plastic hanging pot from Wal-Mart. I think it cost me a little over $3. It didn’t have a hole in the bottom so I drilled a 1-inch hole in the center of the bottom. I then removed the tomato plant from its container and knocked off all the dirt from the roots. Then, it was time to plant.

I stuck the tomato plant through the hole in the bottom of the pot and then filled the pot with dirt, spreading out the roots as I did. I then hung the pot on the clothesline pole.

Here’s a picture of how it looked after planting.

First Upside Down Tomato Plant That We Planted

I planted this on Friday, May 9, 2008. I’ll post other pictures as the season progresses.

I had also thought of planting something in the top of the planter, but I think that will wait until next year when I will be using the recommended 5-gallon plastic buckets to do my planting.

Cya soon!!

Gary
